Genesis G90 Sneaks a Horsepower Bump But Still Offers a Gas Guzzling V6

Apparently the Tau V8 now makes 430hp instead of 420hp when equipped to the RWD version of the Genesis G90. Sneaky sneaky...wait a second, the RWD version with the 365hp, 3.3T V6 is rated at an estimated 17/24 mpg! Woah, the AWD version with the V8 is rated at 16/24 mpg!! Dafaq is going on?!!

So let me get this straight, I can buy the 365hp, 3.3T in RWD form for $68,100. That’s the “base” model. For $1,600 I can option the V8 which all of a sudden makes 430hp and only lose 1 mpg in the city (which drops the average by 1 mpg). Or I can add the HTRAC AWD system to my Genesis G90 3.3T Premium and have zero impact on my estimated fuel economy for $2,500. Or I can add both a 420hp version of the V8 and the HTRAC AWD system to my RWD, V6 Genesis G90 for $4,100 and lose only 1 mpg from the city?

Granted, max torque doesn’t come in until 5,000 rpm with the V8 but I’m not understanding the marketing on this one, Genny. All of the models currently consist of the same feature content for the US so why are the 3.3T models “Premium” while the 5.0L models called “Ultimate?” Those are trim names and the only differences are the powertrain options which have completely negligible efficiency differences? Hell, both engines still don’t average over 22.5 mpg in order to avoid the Gas Guzzler Tax so why even offer both?! If the V6 isnt efficient then you should have either not offered it yet or put a lift kit on the G90 and called it an SUV in order to avoid the tax altogether!

Genesis, Genny...Gene, my friend, I understand you’re excited about being your own brand and having a new turbocharged V6 but let’s calm down. Here’s what we are going to do:

Kinja'd!!!

The 2017 Genesis G90 is the “Premium” trim because you don’t currently offer any features that can be combined into an “Ultimate” trim level. You’re going to drop one of these engines until you can either create more trim levels or tune them to be better separated. Here’s a hint, DROP THE V6! The 3.3T Genesis G90 really should be attempting to hit 21/29 mpg in RWD configuration and 20/27 mpg in AWD form for it to make any sense and to be remotely competitive. You aren’t supposed to downsize your engines in order to get the exact same fuel economy as the larger engine!

Introduce the 3.3T in the G80 Sport and upcoming G70 Sedan (we won’t mention the RWD Kia liftback that is going to have that engine). There is absolutely no reason to offer this engine in the G90 right now since it doesn’t even lower the cost or improve the efficiency. The EPA is giving you guys a polite note that says, “Pull the damn V6 from the G90!”

Get it together Genny, it’s f*cking game time!!

I’d rather have the 3.3T, tbh. I like low-end torque.

Of course assuming Hyundai’s turbo-lag game is on point.

When did he 5.0 drop to a mere 420? Mine has 429...

Oh yea, R-SPEC LYFE!

Do you know what a V8 is? The V8 will still win on low end TQ. Flat torque curve for the win. Yes, it peaks at 5k, but it’s over 300 WTQ at 2250. The 8 speed has ~12-16% drivetrain loss.

I can claim to have some V8 experience, yes. And while I honestly just looked at the V8 specs (430/383) and figured “high revs and less low-end” with nothing other than a low torque number to back me up, these seems to confirm my view...

The 3.3T puts out nearly as much as the V8's peak torque from ~1500rpm. Do you know what a turbo is? :)

Haha, yeah it was one of the engines that Hyundai tweaked the power curve on to assist with efficiency and torque delivery a couple years ago. The Hyundai Group really needs to figure out a way to get these powertrains to be more efficient though, they are lagging across the board.

I can claim to have some Turbo experience, yes. No, it does not put out as much as the peak, those numbers are crank TQ. I understand that the TTV6 has more at the lower end, which should be about 327 WTQ, the difference won’t be much more than the V8. Also, I’d wager the V8 is a bit flatter (I really don’t trust that computer model will be representative), so that engine wailing along in the 3000-6000 RPM range, which is where it stays, I’d guess the V8 will feel a lot better. And the auto does not let you stay at 1300 RPM, I can vouch for that.

I’d guess the TTV6 is very nice, but you make it sound like it will be a monster vs the V8, and I just doubt that.

Efficiency is for people who don’t like powah!

I am really really contemplating the exhaust/intake setup. There was another guy who dynod out like 395 WHP on his R-Spec, or so he claims. But we all know, breath is life.

That’s fair enough. I didn’t exactly trust that graphic, which is why I went looking for another source. And yeah, the V8 will pull far better that far up in the revs. I don’t understand why the auto won’t let you keep the revs low though. If there’s enough power to deal with it there’s no reason why not. To throw a different perspective on it, this thing weighs in similar to my truck. A little higher, actually, but pretty close. It produces much more power. My truck will comfortably accelerate at a greater rate than 80% of traffic without crossing 2000rpm. So why won’t this one cruise at low revs? My first thought the turbos aren’t really working at those revs, but if it’s producing that power there it seems they are. But it sounds like you have first-hand experience with Hyundai tranny’s so I’ll just take it as a rather odd fact.

As far as making the V6 sound like a monster, that’s not really what I was going for... the V8 will be the faster machine, no questions there. But the 3.3T will definitely have a fatter bottom end than the V8, and that happens to be something I like. And while the V8 will still have plenty, the V6 probably suits my driving style more.

That in itself is a really good question. I don’t know what the stall is in the auto, but I know it likes to stay above 2000 RPM on big acceleration. That said, in eco mode and less than 1/2 throttle, it still goes really well and will shift beofre 2500 RPM every time up to 8 (in eco, i think it starts going in 4th, not first, which could explain part of it), but you lay into the loud pedal in sport mode and you’ll go to redline but start off the line at ~2500 RPM. A little happy chirp and some flashing yellow lights and you are suddenly going very fast.

So I guess I made it sound picky, but I usually only talk about really laying into it when talking performance.
